Matthew Arlington, Duke of Rochester, and Alma O'Brien, a reformed Irish rebel, work for the secret services of the Crown of Great Britain. They have also been sporadic lovers for years. At work they fit like a glove, in sex as well, but outside of that, their relationship is nonexistent... or rather, frankly terrible.
In any case, for the Duke this last part isn't a problem. In fact, it's almost a blessing, since ever since he was widowed years ago, it has never crossed his mind to have anything more than sex with women. With any woman. And even less so with that redhead whom he has never fully trusted.
Yes, things are perfect for the Duke.
However, just when life deals him a blow with his daughter Livia's disappearance, Alma starts behaving strangely. And when Livia reappears and it seems everything is returning to normal, Alma decides something that the Duke is not willing to accept.
