Spring 1870
Wilhelmina Justice is not your typical young lady. Currently, she holds a respectable position as the manager of the Pleasantville Hotel, which she and her younger brother and sister inherited from their uncle.
But the young lady also has an interesting side hustle. Born and raised in the nearby Rocky Mountains, she knows those mountains better than anyone – man or woman. Whenever someone unfamiliar with those mountains needs a guide, she is the one who leads them there and ensures their safe return. She’s never refused a client yet.
However, the two strangers who have just arrived at her hotel may be the first.
Gaylord Pettigrew and his mother are searching for Mrs. Pettigrew’s long-lost older son, rumored to be living somewhere in those rugged mountains. The local sheriff refers them to Billie Justice, the best damn mountain guide in that part of Colorado Territory.
The Pettigrew’s hire Billie but are unaware that the young man is really the hotel manager, Wilhelmina Justice.
Things don’t go exactly as planned. Billie finds the cabin where she suspects Mrs. Pettigrew’s other son is living but when she tries to verify that the cabin’s occupant is that long-lost son, she is shot and her assailant flees.
While bandaging her wounds, Ethan discovers Billie is a girl.
Billie is not the only one with a secret. Ethan Dillon and Lillia St. Clair . . . known to Billie as the Pettigrews . . . are government operatives on a secret mission. They have been sent to the Colorado Territory to apprehend a former Confederate officer by the name of Angleton who is hellbent on sowing chaos and destruction as the country struggles to heal from the recent conflict.
Ethan suspects the man who shot Billie is Angleton. He insists Billie must come with them as they pursue Angleton because she is the only one who knows what he looks like.
And of course, she must have a new identity if she’s to travel with the Pettigrews. What better way to hide in plain sight than to become Gaylord Pettigrew’s pretend bride?
Thus begins a journey that takes Billie Justice from her beloved Colorado mountains, across the Great Plains, and on to Washington, DC.
Can she and Ethan work together to stop Angleton? Or will Ethan Dillon steal her heart along the way?
