I came to Ashwick to survive my divorce, not to want anyone.

Four boxes. A temporary job. A fresh start in a town so small it has one traffic light and apparently zero available apartments except the one above a woodworker's shop on a gravel road outside town.

Beck Sawyer is broad-shouldered, bearded, and dangerously patient - the kind of man who brings you coffee without asking how you take it because he already noticed. He builds things with his hands and fixes things without being asked, and I am not in any condition to want him.

I tell myself the sawdust smell coming up through the floorboards doesn't do anything to me. I tell myself the way he looks at me - like I'm something worth taking his time over - is just small-town friendliness. I tell myself I stepped back from that kiss on the creek trail because I'm not ready.

Beck waits. He's very good at waiting.

Turns out I'm not as patient as I thought.
