Port Merryn, Cornwall 1795. William Landers is the youngest son of wealthy boatyard owner Abraham Landers. A kind and fair man, Will is ashamed of the behaviour of his father and older brother, and prefers the company of the local people. Engaged to Eliza, one of his oldest friends, Will feels increasingly trapped, afraid that an unfulfilled life will lead him to become bitter and cruel like his father.

Into the village comes pirate Captain Ethan O'Rourke, after his ship is damaged and needs to be repaired. Sexy and wild, Ethan draws attention from both men and women, and he is determined to have fun during his stay in Cornwall and make some money along the way - whatever it takes.

Ethan and Will meet and it is hate at first sight. Will despises Ethan's disregard for the law, and Ethan sees Will as a provincial, naive do-gooder. But no amount of bad feeling can dispel the intense attraction between them and a passionate relationship begins. Will experiences a sexual awakening he never dreamed possible, and cold-hearted Ethan has to accept that he is capable of feeling love.

When a tragic event happens, turning Will against his family once and for all, he joins forces with Ethan to take as much from them as he can so he can escape Port Merryn. Will he be able to persuade Ethan to let him join him in his new life in the West Indies? Or will Ethan's fear of giving his heart away mean both men will go their separate ways with nothing to share but their memories?
