Knox disrupts the Tory event to capture British envoy, Colonel Littleton, but it is Elizabeth who stands up to the rebel. When British troops arrive and Knox is forced to flee without his captive, Elizabeth thinks she has seen the last of the traitor. But the next day while riding, she is accosted by deserters, and Major Knox risks his life to save her. Elizabeth can’t help but be grateful… and intrigued by him. Which is why when she returns with her father to Philadelphia, Elizabeth does not expose him when she encounters Major Knox, posing as a Tory. Philadelphia is in the hands of the British and Alex has been sent to spy for General Washington. He takes Elizabeth into the gardens and they kiss as they did after he saved her life. Alex feels relatively sure that Elizabeth will not betray him, but he can’t be sure her father who comes looking for her in the garden won’t recognize him. Later that evening he realizes it wouldn’t matter, for Jonathan Lancaster, the Loyalist, is Alex’s contact. As fall turns to winter Elizabeth spends her time with her Quaker friend, visiting the hospitals, and running into Alexander Knox. And with each meeting she finds herself falling more in love with him. While delivering a message to the mother of a young patriot solder she befriended at the hospital, she is rescued again my Major Knox who had discovered what she was about. They are caught in a snowstorm, find refuge and make love. Elizabeth is now certain she loves Alex and wants to spend her life with him, but Alex knows more of the cost of war and tells himself he only wants to see her safe, which means away from him. Between Alex and Elizabeth’s father, she has little contact with Alex…until he discovers she is planning to take medical supplies she has secreted from the British hospital to Washington’s troops at Valley Forge. He and Elizabeth are forced to play a charade when they encounter British troops. Angry with Elizabeth for once again putting herself in danger, Alex still can’t help himself from making love to her. The British are leaving Philadelphia. But before they go a large fete is planned. Elizabeth notices Colonel Littleton enter with soldiers, their eyes on Alex. Elizabeth pulls a punch bowl off the table. Alex looks around, sees Littleton and escapes. But Littleton notices Elizabeth’s ploy and guesses why. Later Alex comes to the Lancaster house to meet with Elizabeth’s father. He tells Jonathan he is leaving Philadelphia and that Jonathan should leave too. Alex fears for Elizabeth. Elizabeth enters the library to see her father and Alex. As she does, Colonel Littleton enters, his pistol aimed at Elizabeth. She is stunned when she discovers her father’s role in the war, but there is no time for that as a fight ensues. Littleton is killed and Elizabeth’s father is wounded. They all leave Philadelphia and go to Alex’s small planation on the Chesapeake. Alex admits his love to Elizabeth, but he leaves for New York. A friend of Alex arrives one day with a letter from Alex stating that if she is reading he is dead. Alex’s friend tells her that Alex was caught as a spy and hanged. On further inquiry, Elizabeth discovers the hanging hasn’t happened yet. She rushes to New York. Portraying herself as a Loyalist fooled by Alex she talks the officer into letting her see Alex. Alex is not happy she is here because she has put herself in danger. But he is forced to go along with her plan to help him escape because she will not leave. less
