She was a witness to the murder of one hundred and forty men and boys in August 1863 during the War Between the States. She saw them kill her husband and son and rape Anastasia, too. With the help of a Union doctor, they saved Anastasia’s life when it caused her to miscarry the baby she was carrying. She also kept her alive when she wanted to die from the loss of all those dear to her. She kept her alive for the next seven years, she also taught her to be a really fine nurse, whether she wanted to or not.She decided that they had stayed in Laurence long enough…there were too many memories for them in Laurence. She wrote to her late husband’s cousin in Jefferson, in the Montana Territory. They were going to move and start all over in a new place. Mac, Doug’s cousin not only helped them find a cabin to live in…they made it livable for them. It was close to the clinic where Anastasia could work as a nurse, and Norma could grow a garden…they could live here and hopefully, start a new life here, without the memories that were back in Laurence.Kincaid was a good doctor in Jefferson and welcomed the new nurse that applied to work for him, but good Lord! She was beautiful beyond belief, how was he going to work with someone so damn good looking beside him all day long? The face that she was a widow didn’t enter it. She put up leave me alone signals that kept everyone at bay, and he read the signals loud and clear…but there was something about her besides her beauty that kept him wanting to get closer to her…would he ever get to call her his own? less
