Chosen (Seals of the Apocalypse, #2)
Kerrigan Bane
Dominic is human, not demon, and in order to kidnap humanity’s greatest weapon, he’s had to make a pact with Satan. He won’t tell Eve what the pact is or why he’s risking so much to set her free, but the more time she spends with him, the more she suspects their history is as entwined as the roots of a tree. Eve knows demons aren’t supposed to love, let alone love a human man, but as they travel across an apocalyptic landscape, Eve finds herself drawn to him.
When a betrayal makes her question everything she’s ever known, Eve has to make a choice: side with her demon brethren or save what’s left of humanity. But if she destroys the world the way Satan wants her to, she’ll not only be giving up the chance to become more than a living weapon, she'll be giving up her chance at love.
Length: 26,000 words
Excerpt:
Even before his eyes opened, she felt him stir. His fever had cooled. At some point during the night, he’d threaded his fingers around hers. She’d let him.
“Dominic?” she whispered.
He opened his eyes and smiled when he saw her. Warm. Intimate. As if he knew her the way her hands knew the heft and weight of her swords. Eve squeezed her eyes shut, trying to force another memory to the surface, but found only a faint echo inside her head.
He kissed her.
Her eyes flew open. She wanted to ask him what he was doing, but the feel of his lips against hers felt good. He kissed her like he was savoring her, and she couldn’t help but lose herself to his touch. His hand traveled up her side until he cupped the back of her head, his fingers threading through her hair.
Dominic pulled her on top of him, and her legs fell to either side of his hips. Through the thin blanket, she could feel him grow hard beneath her.
Their kiss deepened, and forgotten heat stirred deep in the pit of her belly. She wanted this, wanted him, and this sudden knowledge brought with it a terrible realization: if she destroyed the world the way Balthazaar wanted her to, she’d be killing Dominic too.
