A year has passed since Deacon Cochrane was killed in self-defense by Grace Ellery and it was discovered that he was guilty of four murders. Everyone has tried to return to a life of normalcy—Grace has returned to college, began a new job as an English teacher, and she’s attending therapy, while Sam has taken over as the medical examiner in Murray part-time.

Their life has changed from one of fear and serial killers to a life of real estate and an envious ex-girlfriend. Of course, everything can’t remain peaceful. When Sam examines a victim of murder, he finds that any identifying characteristics on the man have been destroyed, and the man was found in a car from Ohio.

Then, Grace learns that Francis Tate, the man who attacked her in Ohio, cut a deal to get out of prison early. Neither Sam or Grace tell each other what they have discovered, which is dangerous as Francis comes out of the shadows, intending to confront the woman who put him in prison and the man she is with now.

Deacon was dangerous because he was killing for someone he loved, but Francis is much more of a threat because he has nothing to lose.
