Dane had forgiven me and we were a couple again, albeit in secret. Then out of the blue his Uncle Johnny announced his daughter Careen’s engagement to Dane, her first cousin. This was as much of a surprise to Dane as it was to me, but Dane felt he had to honor his uncle’s choice in accordance with the Irish Traveller custom of arranged marriages.

Where did that leave me? Dane was still living with my family. He was my stepbrother after all. So I could see but not touch. Like but not love.

As I was in love with Dane there was no way I was going to tempt or persuade him to forsake his clan honor. I loved him too deeply for that. I could only carry on from day to day hoping some chance of fate would prevent their marriage for Dane would never change his values for me, would he?
