Promises of a Soldier by Rebekah Summersby
Lieutenant Timothy Mathon made a promise to his best friend and fellow soldier, Lieutenant Casper Burton, as Casper lay dying after a skirmish with the French. With war looming Tim had been unable to carry out the promise to look after Casper's younger, orphaned, sister, Miss Emma Burton, until she was nearly destitute. Having returned to England just to see what Casper's sister needed, and needing to return to his regiment as soon as possible, he saw only one solution to her problem and his lack of time to accomplish what he had promised his friend.
Miss Emma Burton had been grateful to the man who had saved her from a potentially horrible death of sickness and starvation, and she had made it her life's ambition to somehow repay that debt. While her saviour, and new husband, fought in Europe she helped him in the only way she could. Emma used every little bit of knowledge and skills at penny pinching to bring Timothy's family property into profit from a nearly bankrupt condition. She hoped that when Timothy did finally return he would see the value of having her as his wife, and hopefully never regret having to marry her to save her.
