Q: You’ve been hailed as introducing a new type of romance—one where the heroine is the alpha-billionaire badass. Was that deliberate?

A: In a way, yes. I’m a long-time fan of both contemporary romance and action novels like the Jack Reacher series. I wanted to take what I love about both genres and combine them into a single series where the main character is a relatable, interesting, complex powerhouse of a woman. The intent was to turn the alpha-billionaire badass archetype on its head. Four books later I’m being called a “genre-bender.” I quite like that.     

Q: Why did you finish the prequel, Goddess Rising, before completing this last book?   

A: After I published Hell or High Water, I wanted to go deep into Samantha’s background before writing the conclusion. I felt I owed it to her character to tell her backstory so that the reader could fully understand the genesis of her struggles with the past in Fearless. 

Q: So, does this book really mark the end of the Complicated Creatures saga?

A: I’m considering writing a couple short novellas based on the original cast, but my next big project will be working on a series for Roxanne de Soto’s fixer character. She’s a fascinating mix of vigilante and vulnerability, and since Samantha is Rox’s benefactor so-to-speak, she’ll also be in the mix!
