Silas has plans concerning the residents of the home where he works, plans which involve the release of all of them from the cruelty and deprivation they are receiving at the hands of an unscrupulous owner, and staff who do not care. When Eva comes on the night staff and discovers what he is planning she wants to be a part of it and suggests Lower Pine as a destination where she knows there is work, also a group of people who are very caring. But it is over 350 miles distant and what lies ahead involves danger and patience. It also involves two people getting to know each other and liking what they find. Maybe it could involve love.. This is the story of a group of people who risk a lot to find happiness and a reason for living in a society which shows little sympathy for those they regard as the undeserving poor or mentally ill.
