I probably should have known that being the only woman in a pub overflowing with strong ale and even stronger intoxicated soldiers would lead to trouble. As the conversations grew increasingly raunchy and the supply of my grandfather’s hearty Dunfeld ale began to dwindle, trouble certainly seemed about to spill over.
“You a maiden yet, wench? How old are you, girl?”
I dropped an overflowing tankard of dark ale on the table of the uniformed man posing the question. His two drunk companions grunted, leering at me with a mouthful of filthy stained teeth.
I glared at the questioner.
Captain Mason Hawke was the odorous commander of the King’s cavalry that had arrived late last night. Beads of sweat covered my forehead. My thin blouse, drenched from the spray of pouring and serving hundreds of rounds of foaming beer all morning, clung to me like a second skin. The soaked material barely hid the fullness of my bosom from so many wanton eyes.
“None of your business, sir,” I snorted.
I dared not show an ounce of weakness. If I let him know I had just turned twenty, or if I lost my composure and revealed the secret of my true Fae nature, the morning would end even worse than the last two hours had been of being ogled and pawed by the rowdy mob of men in my grandfather’s tiny establishment. The Painted Owl was the only inn and pub in the remote village of Dunfeld.
