Heartbroken, I flee to the Scottish Highlands, seeking sanctuary in Bannock, an idyllic town I visited as a child and which I still remember fondly.
But the Bannock Hotel, once full of warmth, is now managed by a very grumpy Scotsman. I don’t recognise him straight away, but I soon learn he’s Alasdair McIntyre, the first boy I ever kissed.
As a twelve-year-old, he was sweet, but now? His blunt remarks and cocky smirks infuriate me, while my comebacks only reinforce his view I’m a stuck-up big-city “lass”.
I came here to heal, not to be provoked by this irritatingly handsome Highlander. Yet beneath his gruff exterior and admittedly impressive muscles, there are glimmers of another side to Alasdair.
I mustn’t let my guard down. My heart is already cracked. If I let him in, I risk shattering it altogether…
