Prisoner Neal Landon was serving a life sentence in prison when he found out about the Life Sentence Diversion and Rehabilitation Program. Infamous for its cruel treatment of prisoners, the program boasted one significant upside: one day, it would earn him his release.
Today, though, Neal's decision to enter the program had him struggling to pull a cart through a public park. He wears a painful spiked punishment collar that chokes him with every breath. His handler, Martin Kensey, is focused on training Neal to take commands from the reins, and is slow to notice the prisoner's increasing distress. He finally decides to lead the shaking prisoner, crying in pain and gasping for breath, home to relieve some of his agony.
When Neal collapses in harness, Martin acts frantically to save his life, horrified that he might have killed a prisoner. Will Neal survive? And if he does, will he ever feel safe pulling a cart again?
