The Assignment by J C Gordon
Mara Fitzgerald knew her curiosity and quest for knowledge would get her into trouble one day. She just had no idea that when she dug up a strange skull on one of her training digs just how bad that level of trouble would be. It arrived in the shape of a dark-haired angel, his face so beautiful, his captivating green gaze boring deep into her soul. Only the man who walked into her home was clearly no angel and she knew instantly she was in trouble. He was a dark predator, the mythical vampire she’d been researching, and he was as cruel as he was beautiful. Mara knew without a doubt that she would be lucky to survive this encounter. And even if she did survive the meeting, she knew her life would probably never be the same again.

Demetri Bozic had accepted the Assignment from the Vampire Council, needing to put some distance between himself and his best friend Caleb Ryder and his annoying little redheaded human. His ego was dented and he needed to hunt to recover his equilibrium. Caleb might forget that they were deadly predators but he knew the truth. All vampires were monsters, and there were few as monstrous as him. He would carry out his mission regardless of how beautiful Mara Fitzgerald was. There would be none of this falling in love with a human nonsense that his friend had succumbed to. If she posed a threat to the Vampire race, he would stop her heart in an instant, because that’s what monsters did. Wasn’t it?
