Another school year is starting in the hallowed halls of Rochester Heights Montessori, and John Forental is debating whether or not to put his name out there for a second term as its PTA President. The internal struggle has to be tabled when he receives a mysterious text searching for the whereabouts of his daughter, Emilia. This connects him with Billie Sanderson, a woman on the verge of homelessness, and the only thin connection he has to his daughter's previous life.

Flying her out to Rochester is a no-brainer, but his tenure at Rochester Heights isn't over yet. The school politely asks him to go visit a parent who is on the fence about enrolling. Despite not wanting to be a salesman or cheerleader for the school, he agrees, meeting Rossa Vachan, a young influencer living off grid in the woods in Rochester's most exclusive area while her palatial mansion is being constructed.
