Rachel is a veterinarian hanging on by a thread. The loss of her father brings about the disappearance of light in her life. The grief is suffocating; the grief is overwhelming. However, there is no one to help her and the world continues to spin. Practicality is Rachel's calling card. She can reason her way through most things. Bills have to be paid and eventually she needs to afford a burial. It was time to just push through and make that money. For now, she finds comfort in speaking to the box of ashes that was once her father. Unfortunately, he doesn't say much in return.

Lachlan is the leader and Alpha of a large pack of wolf shifters. He obtained that position after his parents and the majority of adults perished in an attack by the neighboring wolves ten years prior. His entire life afterwards was dedicated to making sure something like that would never happen again. Not only did he and his closest friends take revenge, but they also then built an industry around defense and contracting with the human world. His existence is exclusively for the pack, resigning himself to a life of serving and putting any of his own wants on hold.

Both of their lives change, however, when Rachel decides to go out for tacos after work and the wolf shifter scents the woman meant to be his fated mate. Unfortunately, their first meeting goes poorly and the mighty wolf shifter has to watch the woman meant to be his life partner waltz right out the door. Lachlan remains unperturbed, though, and enlists the help of his pack to help orchestrate bringing his mate back to where she belongs (even if she isn't quite aware of it.)

Together they tackle grief in its many forms, the affection that comes in understanding, and the spark of a beginning in the paranormal world.
