Daniel let Mildred continue celebrating her achievement. She was so beautiful when she smiled genuinely, though she would have to learn that his generosity came with conditions.
"You must believe it. With this, your family will regain their spirits and even have a protector like me..." He boasted so that she would feel even more indebted to him.
"It's more than I expected. I don't know why they said you were someone so wicked, when it's obvious you're not entirely so."
"People are right about some things, Mildred, and you'll know that now. What I grant you will be under my conditions. If you want to see your family well, I promise they will never lack for anything, and it will be thanks to you..."
"Conditions? What conditions?" Those questions she asked filled her with fear. Generosity did not seem to be Lord Cholmondeley's strong suit.
