Det er derfor vansekligt for Alf at få lov til at være munk og elver på samme tid, idet han ikke er menneske og derfor ikke er skabt i Guds billede. Har elvere en sjæl? Kan en elver tjene ved Guds alter uden at spotte den Hellige Gud? Disse er nogle af de spørgsmål der piner Alf. Hans verden bliver dog først rystet i sin grundvold, da han møder en af sine egne, elverkvinden Thea, der med sin fristende skønhed og meget ublufærdige væremåde er en direkte trussel mod Alfs løfter over for kirken. Efter hans beskyttede liv i klosteret er hans følelser over for Thea en meget skræmmende opvågning, som han meget fast benægter. Ud over Alf perosnlige identitetskampe og forsøg på at holde sin verden på plads i de stålfaste rammer som kirken byder, så er Alf også viklet ind i et politisk spil, da tre kongerier står på randen af en krig, som må og skal forhindres. less
