Still, Georgina never could resist a good horse race with her cousin. A tight turn loomed just ahead. Georgina slowed her mare around the bend. After all, she could not win the race if she did not stay on the horse. She smiled at the thought of landing indecorously in the bushes, as she had done more than once before. Around the curve, a man on a black stallion suddenly appeared, cantering straight for her. Georgina pulled on the reins and turned her horse, missing the oncoming rider by inches. Juno galloped off the path and narrowly avoided the trunk of an old oak tree. She patted her neck and said, “There, girl.” Juno slowed to a trot and Georgina swung her around. Her cousin Edmund had reined in his horse. Georgina thought he looked unaccountably annoyed. It was not like him to fall into a sulk. Nobody had been hurt – he should be laughing at her ridiculously close call. The man she’d nearly run over looked equally put out. Good Lord, they looked like a couple of old ladies. Georgina trotted over to the pair. The man was on a sixteen hand stallion. He handled his horse with the experience that could only come from a lifelong habit of riding. He had ash blond hair and striking grey-blue eyes. Georgina thought they were rather like the color of a stormy sea. Particularly stormy at that moment. He would be quite handsome if he weren’t glaring as if someone had challenged him to a duel. Edmund nodded to the stranger. “Greystone,” he said. The man called Greystone seemed almost to be set in stone himself. Through tight lips, he said, “Carrington.” Georgina waited to be introduced to this cheerful person. less

Viscount Whittleston, master of Stonebridge, just down the road from Buckthorn Green, is much involved with the planning of the festival and an enthusiastic participant. His son, and his son's friend Mr. Darcy, are not so enthusiastic as they both think it ridiculous. Elizabeth meets Mr. Darcy at the opening ceremony, in which game young men make speeches about Horatio Buckthorn in an effort to get elected the man who will play the hero in the reenactment. Darcy would never consider participating and Elizabeth sees that he disdains everything about the festival and the charms of eccentric Buckthorn Green. Mr. Bingley, however, throws himself into the proceedings and wins a part. Sadly, that part is of the bear and Mr. Bingley will soon find himself racing across the green wearing fur pelts, in pursuit of Horatio Buckthorn. Georgiana comes to stay at Stonebridge, and Wickham is in the neighborhood, keeping himself out of Darcy's sight. Our sea air will be a welcome change at that time of year and you would have the further enjoyment of being present for our annual Horatio Buckthorn Festival. Horatio Buckthorn, if you will remember, is rather famous in these parts. Most of the neighborhood claims some sort of relation to the man, though were one to examine the genealogy of such claims, one might find enough twists and turns and vague connections and suppositions to cast more than a shadow of doubt. One might conclude that there was just as much chance that the individual in question had descended from Henry VIII as Horatio Buckthorn. less
