We had hoped you would be older, but I guess now is as good of a time as any.” She leaned in closer to me, her eyes meeting mine. “You were not left at the train station as we had told you. You were not abandoned. We needed the world to believe that story so you would be safe.” She put her arm around me as if to hold me together for the news she was about to tell me. “The reality is that you come from a land high in the mountains of India,” she said, looking wistful as she continued to speak. “From a very special village, where many extraordinary people have lived for thousands of years in harmony. We, the Magicals that inhabited the village, were from all over the world, from different origins and backgrounds, and were very happy in our little community. Until one day, when the Draccos came upon our town. They were a vicious clan of people who wanted everything we had and would not stop until they got it. Their leader’s plan was to take the Queen and rule the kingdom, and make her give to them her unborn child. It was foretold that the Queen was bearing a very special child. Not only was she of powerful royal blood, but she was prophesied to be a very rare soul as well.” “We fought against the Dracco clan until the Queen gave birth. We realized then that the Royal child was even rarer than it was originally predicted. She had been born with the mark of the Mandurago. The villagers, fearing the worst for the child, helped the Queen sneak the baby out of the kingdom. The Draccos were so enraged when they found the child missing, that they took their fire to the kingdom and burned it down. Only a few escaped to tell the tale.” My mother’s eyes were wet, tears began to roll down her cheeks. My dad smiled at me and continued on with the story. “We were chosen out of all the Magicals in the village to raise you. We had been in America when the final attack happened. You came to us that stormy night and we vowed never to let anything harm you or anyone find out who you truly were.” “Who am I?” I demanded. My dad looked deep in my eyes and gently said to me. “You are Kali, Princess of the Oubliettes and marked soulmate of the Mandurago.” The room began to spin and I hit the floor. He walked towards me and paused for a moment, as if he was trying to make a decision. When he finally reached me, his eyes looked worried and I knew he was struggling with what he was about to tell me. He placed his fingers under my chin, and lifted up my head so our eyes would meet. “I am your soulmate, I have traveled oceans of time be with you.” He paused for a moment as if deciding whether he wanted to continue. He moved his hands to mine and held them both, looking deeper into my eyes. “Mandurago is who I am, but we are also known by other names around the world. Some know us as Strigoi or Ramanga, but you might know me better as Vampire.” After speaking the words he was reluctant to say, he stood ominously still waiting for my reaction. His eyes were searching mine, desperately trying to read my thoughts. In my heart I had already known that he had to be a vampire, there was no other explanation. But actually hearing him say it, well that hit me harder than I had expected. I stumbled backwards a bit and sat down on the couch just as my knees decided to give out underneath me. He rushed to my side and waited for me to speak. I took an unsteady breath. “I knew it, I already knew it. Even when you first came to see me at the store I thought it.” He played with my bangs, and moved the hair out of my eyes. I turned and looked at him. “But you’re not cold, you’re supposed to be the undead and you’re awake, you’re awake right now. It’s daytime…you should be sleeping in a dark coffin or something.” I looked around and noticed again that all the draperies had been closed. “I am as alive as you are. Why would I be cold? As for daytime, I prefer to sleep during the day. I do not fall into a coffin when the sun goes down as the old Dracula story goes. I sleep when I am tired, just as you do…no different. The sun is not my friend though, the legend has that correct. I don’t burn, but it is very uncomfortable, so I stay out of it as much as possible.” “How about the blood drinking? Is that just an old Dracula story?” I asked hoping that was the case. He looked at me, like he was afraid of the question. “No, unfortunately that is true, but I don’t hunt down humans and kill them to suck their blood like in the stories. I prefer to feed off animals, the same as you do. Although...I don’t slaughter them, roast them, skin them and then eat their flesh like humans do.
