Lucy lifted herself to her feet, gripping the blade the way Joe had showed her, and then dashed out into the open. The demon was lying dead on the ground. Black blood spurted out from a gaping wound on its chest. Joe stood with his back toward her, except it wasn’t the Joe she knew. The bright light that had burst into the alley came from a pair of massive, feathered wings sprouting from his back. The translucent feathers glowed with an unearthly golden light. His shirt had been ripped to shreds. Claw marks across his skin oozed fresh blood.
