Alex Benedict is a student of magic in his third year at Hartbridge University with no clear direction for his studies. That is, until he puts himself in the middle of a criminal investigation by literally stepping in it. This is the story of Alex's first case with Agent Murielle Lapointe, and while it's lacking in romance, it's a delightful look into grumpy young Alex and what he got up to before he was a professional consultant.

Set in the space between The Courtship of Julian St. Albans and its sequel, Apprenticeship, this short story is a gently spooky tale of Alex visiting his old campus for a night lecture, and getting more than he bargained for. The mystery and spookiness are both very light, and Julian makes a small but important appearance... more

After the events of The Guardianship of Julian St. Albans, Alex and Julian take a few weeks to rest and recover before diving into the new challenges ahead. This is a warm, domestic novella in the same vein as Rosemary for the Holidays, where we check in with our beloved characters but do not, for once, have a murder to solve. However, the Queens have seen fit to give gifts to our boys, and like all gifts from such personages, there are strings attached.
