Jack is trying to come to terms with the trauma of the Battle of Salamanca while he was on active service on the Peninsula. The extended Attwood family take him to their hearts, especially after he returns the favour of saving two of the family. Jack’s own family is less supportive, and there are others who treat him with hostility, including those who would like to court Diana and see him as a threat. When he and Diana foil a bold theft, however, they have made some serious enemies indeed and Jack must overcome his fears and aversions for the girl he loves. less
